the u.s. will reach its federal borrowing limit on new year's eve, threatening the same default that was narrowly avoided last year. in a letter to lawmakers, geithner vowed to take extraordinary measures to avoid a new default but said any remedies would only be short- term. the u.s. has acknowledged for the first time a carried out a september drone strike that killed 11 people in yemen. the victims were packed into ain truck on a desert road in a town of radda when they're struck by a missile. the washington post reports the yemeni government tried to hide u.s. responsibility for the attack by taking credit for carrying it out. the yemeni government also initially claimed only militants were killed in the strike, or forced to withdraw that claim after mourners tried to bring the dead bodies to the gates of the presidential residence. according to the washington post, the attack has devastated the community and militants in surrounding areas have gained more recruits for their fight against the u.s.-backed yemeni government since it occurred. diplomatic cables released by wiki

johns has been following both cases for us. joe, explain the impact of today's decision. >> well, it is big impact. as you know, this is one of those cases that people talk about over the water cooler. let's start with proposition 8. very simple, wolf, it is the california ballot initiative passed in 2008 by the people of the state of california that established marriage as between a man and a woman. it overturned a court case that said same sex couples have the right to marry. windsor is the other case you were talking about, it is an attack on defense of marriage act which was passed in 1996 by the congress, signed by the president. it's called windsor against the united states. it is about a woman named edith windsor who had a long time relationship with her partner, and they were married in 2007. spier died in new york in 2009, and edith windsor got a lot of money. something like $363,000 as a result of that, she was required to pay that in federal estate taxes on her inheritance. she would not have had to pay that money if federal law had given that same sex relationship the

a whole lot of attention. turns out it got very specific attention from both the fbi and the u.s. district attorney in connecticut. today, noelle alba was arrested, charged with lying to federal agents who were investigating her for fraudulent fund-raising activity. here you see her leaving court in hartford, connecticut. she was released on $50,000 bond. if she is convicted, she could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. the fbi's criminal complaint refers to the reporting we did last week, saying quote, on or about december 19th, 2012, cnn's anderson cooper 360 program broadcast a story regarding charity scams and the sandy hook tragedy. alba was a subject of the program and allowed the cnn crew to record her audio voice in response to questions about her involvement with charities to help sandy hook victims. alba claimed that the paypal account listed in the request for donations was not hers, only that she had an account like that. alba claimed she never set up any funds for anybody. the journalist reported that alba claimed she immediately refunded all of the donations
